Mark 12:41-44 ESV
And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”
This link, is for an article of a woman in Florida who only had a jar of pennies to pay for the things she needed from the store. The clerk rejected her form of money and she threatened to kill him but stormed out instead.
Have you ever been SO POOR financially that this is all you had? Desperate for the things you needed but only had pennies and probably just enough gas even to make it to the store- just running on fumes? I have. More times than I can count.
Have you ever been desperate for something but have no control over the situation in which to attain it? It seems all the odds are stacked against you and there’s now way up/ out/ pointed in the direction you need? I have. It is infuriating. It will push you to insanity.
I believe this woman here was in this position. I sympathize with her. I hope she reads this, because dear sweetheart – you are not alone! Did you know that your beautiful pennies have much value? MUCH VALUE!
In the verse above, Jesus is telling his disciples in front of the Treasury – very important financial record keepers of the Jewish Temple that this woman’s single penny – all that she had – is worth more than the rich people’s thousands and thousands of dollars.
This is why, when in church or in a giving situation – if all you have are a couple pennies… Don’t hesitate to give what you have. Even though to everyone else it may seem miniscule. To God? It shows how much you truly love him. How much you trust him to do what is right with your last penny.
Sweet beautiful, lady in Florida. Take heart. Your pennies are treasures!
